She earned her Bachelor of Science in Recreation from Indiana University Bloomington, specializing in Therapeutic Recreation with a minor in Psychology. In 1997, she became a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), a credential she continues to hold.
Shelly pursued advanced education in special education, earning a Master of Arts in Teaching from National Louis University in Chicago in 2004, with dual specializations in Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders. She later completed her Special Education Administration Licensure at the University of Northern Colorado in 2010. In 2012, she achieved National Board Certification as a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT), specializing in Exceptional Needs for students from Early Childhood through Young Adulthood. She also holds a Colorado Master Teacher Certificate.
Her professional journey began at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), where she worked from 1997 to 2005 as a CTRS across the Spinal Cord Unit, the Wirtz Sports Program, and the Center for Health and Fitness. In 2005, Shelly relocated to Colorado to serve as a special education administrator for South Routt School District, supporting both middle and high school students. In 2008, she joined Boulder Valley School District and Boulder High School as a Special Education Teacher and Learning Specialist.
Since 2016, Shelly has served as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Special Education at the University of Northern Colorado, where she continues to mentor future educators and contribute to the field.
To support her mission in creating holistic lifestyles for individuals with disabilities, Shelly designed, developed, and opened a private practice, FourPoints in Boulder, CO, in 2015. FourPoints provides therapeutic interventions in education, career, community, and recreation to encourage individuals to navigate independence.
Shelly is actively involved in several adaptive sports organizations, teaching alpine skiing, water skiing, sailing, and SCUBA diving. She spends her free time with her husband, Dan, fly fishing, sailing, SCUBA diving, skiing, and enjoying the gift of life; recreation is her therapy.
